We moved into our home over 10 years ago and why does it feel longer than that? We're in a 1500 sq. ft. townhome and we're itching to get us more space. Before we put our home on the market, I need to get this grout clean and restore it back to its original glory. In this post, I'm going to show you the best way to clean tile grout using items you can find at the grocery store.

What is the best homemade tile grout cleaner?

Borax is an excellent and inexpensive way to clean your tile grout. I just make a paste with some baking soda, Borax, and warm water, then scrub. I used a toothbrush for the photos I took in this post but I did end up investing in one of those scrubbers that hook onto an electric drill and I had my floor clean in no time.

Where do I find Borax?

Borax is found in your local grocers' laundry aisle. It's usually near the OxiClean or the bottom of the racks. While you're there, head to your baking aisle to grab a box of baking soda. All in all, this cleaner should cost around $10 to make and you will have plenty to clean your tile grout.

Or you can buy it all online below.

  • 1/3 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda
  • Hot Water until your consistency is a paste
  • Tile Grout Brush or Grout Cleaning Attachment Head

Once I mixed the mixture up into a thick paste, I slathered it onto the grout lines between my tile and let it sit for a minute or two before I started scrubbing.

If your tile grout cleaner becomes thick and nonmailable, just add a few tablespoons of water and it will return to its original state.

I prefer using Borax to clean my tile rather than cleaning grout with Bleach because there are fewer fumes and I don't get that nauseating headache from the smell. I can clean my grout more efficiently with the grout cleaner tool and some Borax paste.

The dirt lifts up almost immediately and turns your homemade tile grout cleaner almost a brown tint. You can continue using it for a few more areas and then I would recommend making an entirely new batch of the grout cleaner.

I recommend when choosing a tile and grout color, go for something warm and almost camouflage – black even – so that every bit of dirt doesn't look like it doesn't belong there. I never did seal my tile either when we built our home so that is something else I would change.
If you do not have the drill attachment, it does take a bit of elbow grease but the fact that the grout is now the same color it was 10 years ago is a miracle all in of itself. I won't clean my grout any other way now – well unless my mom pays someone to do it for me.
